These obsessions and compulsions significantly disrupt daily functioning and cause considerable suffering to those affected.<\/p>\n<p>Although affected individuals try to ignore or stop the intrusive thoughts, their anxiety only increases. In the end, they still feel compelled to perform compulsive behaviors to alleviate at least some of the stress. Despite attempts to ignore or get rid of unpleasant thoughts and subsequent compulsions, the urge almost always returns. This leads to rituals and the so-called vicious circle of obsessive-compulsive disorder.<\/p>\n<p>Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder often focus on certain topics, such as excessive fear of bacterial contamination. To alleviate fears of contamination, they feel compelled to wash their hands until the pain becomes too intense or skin damage is visible.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2>What are the causes of obsessive\u2013compulsive disorder?<\/h2>\n<p>The cause of obsessive-compulsive disorder is still not fully understood.
